A few of the questions we’re often asked:
Q: What is CAT5 cable?
Short for Category 5, network cabling that consists of four twisted pairs of copper wire terminated by RJ45 connectors. Cat-5 cabling supports frequencies up to 100 MHz and speeds up to 1000 Mbps. It can be used for ATM, token ring, 1000Base-T, 100Base-T, and 10Base-T networking.
Computers hooked up to LANs are connected using Cat-5 cables, so if you’re on a LAN, most likely the cable running out of the back of your PC is Category 5.
What is the difference between CAT5 & CAT6?
Both CAT5e and CAT6 can handle speeds of up to 1000 Mbps, or a Gigabit per second. This is more than sufficient for the speed of by far the most internet connections. The chance is small that you currently have an internet connection with which you can achieve up to 500 Mbps speed.
The main difference between CAT5e and CAT6 cable lies within the bandwidth, the cable can support for data transfer. CAT6 cables are designed for operating frequencies up to 250 MHz, compared to 100 Mhz for CAT5e. This means that a CAT6 cable can process more data at the same time. Think of it as the difference between a 2- and a 4-lane highway. On both you can drive the same speed, but a 4-lane highway can handle much more traffic at the same time.
Q: How long will it take you to attend to our fault?A:
Ofcom dictates that we should attend a fault within sixteen hours. The industry average is eight hours and our average response time is four hours. We will attempt to have an engineer on site as soon as possible and will work remotely on the fault if possible whilst travelling.
Q: When we move office can we leave the BT work to you?
The answer is yes. We have contacts within BT and all of the other carriers that we use that will allow us to talk to one person that we have established a relationship with over several years. We tend to find it is easier for us and the customer if we take care of the line installation and shifts.
Q: Can we purchase a system over a period of time?
Yes. We have several options available to all potential and existing customers. You can either lease over a period of time, hire purchase or purchase outright.
Q: Is it possible to have more than one 0800 number?
A non-geographic number can be attached to any landline. You can also have more than one number attached to the same line.
Q: Can I have a number in another town even though I am not based there?
Yes, if you would like to provide say county wide presence this works very well.
Q: What is a DDI?
A DDI is a number which is attached to your ISDN telephone line. This is a fictional number. If you have two channels of ISDN you can make or receive two calls at the same time. You could have a range of 50 numbers attached to the ISDN i.e. 243600-243649. You would be able to point these numbers at different handsets on your system for incoming calls but you would still only be able to have two concurrent calls in action. To enable more concurrent calls, you would have to add a further two channels of ISDN.
Q: Can we have the bit that says press 1 for sales, 2 for service?
This is known as an auto attendant or IVR. These can be good fun to set up since they are either very easy with two options or extremely complex with different levels and menus.
They are available on all systems sometimes as standard, sometimes at a cost depending on your choice of manufacturer.
Q: Can I forward my calls from the office to my mobile?
Most systems are capable of achieving this task. Some manufacturers make it easier than others and it is always faster using ISDN lines.
Q: What is ISDN?
Integrated Services Digital Network (ISDN) is a circuit-switched telephone network system, designed to allow digital transmission of voice and data over ordinary telephone copper wires, resulting in better quality and higher speeds than that available with the PSTN system. More broadly, ISDN is a set of protocols for establishing and breaking circuit switched connections, and for advanced call features for the user.
Q: Can we have music on Hold?
Yes, all systems can handle music on hold.
This is a rapidly changing market. We have moved on from the plinkety plonk of greensleeves and RingTail Comms are now able to produce tailored music on hold in under 24 hours. Please refer to the music on hold section under products.
